Crystal's Story

Crystal Montgomery is a nineteen-year-old girl battling osteosarcoma cancer. Crystal was diagnosed with cancer on July 10th, 2012. At eighteen-years-old Crystal began her fight with this malignant disease that had taken over her left shoulder and lungs. This diagnosis left her life and the lives of loved ones around her in shambles.

Despite her courage and fighting, the cancer had destroyed her left shoulder and she received the news in mid-September 2012 that she was to undergo an arm amputation. In an effort to lift her spirits and show Crystal the support and love behind her, her friends set to create an online social media campaign known as “BieberforCrystal” for the pop-sensation Justin Bieber to visit her at the Cross Cancer Institute. Through the hard work and dedication of her support network, her dream came true and Justin Bieber visited Crystal on October 15, 2012.

With this visit, it was obvious the spark in Crystal was back – the spark to fight the cancer once again. On November 26, 2012, Crystal underwent limb-salvage surgery to amputate her left shoulder and 10% of her scapula in hopes to fully remove the primary tumor. Despite the life-changing surgery and extensive chemotherapy, the tumors in Crystals’ lungs continued to grow aggressively. In February 2013, doctors attempted to remove the fastest growing lung tumor resulting in a left lung, middle lobe lobectomy. After recovering from the surgery, Crystal continued chemotherapy with the potential end date of early May 2013.

However, Crystal’s latest scans from May 6, 2013, showed that despite chemotherapy and treatment, her lung tumors continued to grow rapidly, and that the cancer had returned to the remains of her left shoulder. With this new finding, the doctor gave Crystal the news that she had no further  treatment options available at The Cross Cancer Institute. All her physician could do was treat her cancer symptoms (pain, fatigue, nausea, etc) as they arose. The Montgomery Family are looking into "Trials and Alternative " treatments in around and outside of Alberta.

With these desperate circumstances, adventuring across the border or even staying within the country can be costly.

For this reason Angels for Crystal has been created. To not only allow Crystal to see if she has more options, but to bring back hope to herself and her loved ones, because she is still young and deserves to live to the fullest extent.
